With this in mind you are encouraged to play the game on "realistic" difficulty on PC, as I did.
I am not usually a "hard mode" kind of person but I found Conviction on PC to be relatively easy even on the hardest difficulty level, likely due to mouse aim. In order to play Conviction you must sign-in to Ubisoft's new Uplay online service, and you must constantly keep your connection just like with an MMO game. This offers some benefits, like cloud saves and no disc needed in the drive, but the obvious down-side is not being able to play when your internet is out, and the unsure future of the game should Ubisoft ever collapse.
Splinter Cell: Conviction is an easy recommendation for people who like stealth games and action shooters both. Conviction combined fast-paced shooter gameplay with classic stealth gameplay and really makes you feel like a predator stalking and then taking down his prey. If that sounds like fun to you, the polish and fun on display here is well worth a purchase. This is one of the best games I have ever played. In these days it seems many games are rushed out the door and Splinter Cell Conviction feels so thoroughly completed.
All in all I feel that they delivered in the sense that when you play this game you truly feel like you are the best of the best. I thought the storyline was great too. There were some plot twists and I felt that it was emotionally engaging and had believable characters for the most part, although at times the bad guys seemed to fit the "evil villain" stereotype too much.
I think this game was good enough that I, a person who has played and loved all of the previous splinter cells, still liked it. In previous titles it was obnoxious to have the whole screen get so dark that you can't see anything when you are in the dark unless you have the color settings so bleached out as to ruin the image's quality. In this game, the screen goes black and white when you are in the cover of dark with is equally informative, but makes the game more playable.
I definitely like that Sam is faster and more mobile in this one. Previous Splinter Cell games gave Sam essentially unusable weapons. In this game he is given a wide range of weapons which you have the option to choose between. The power of Sam's weapon feels on par with the enemy's weapons, as it should be.
The enemies coordinate pretty well to go to where they think you are which makes for some fun cat and mouse. This a beautiful game. A lot of times throughout the game I just stopped to look at the artistic depth of the graphics. This is among the most visibly attractive games I have played. And for extended gameplay even without multi-player, you can do deniable ops, perhaps my favorite part of the game for replaying.
The game just feels so complete. The interrogations allow you to interact with the environment. The hand-to-hand combat uses the the weapon you are carrying if you have one so they are a wide range of attacks.
At one point I was using one guard as a human shield while another was shooting toward me, I threw him forward into the other guy who then fell onto the ground. When I walked into a civilian on the street he said, "Hey watch it! It just feels like almost anything you intuitively feel like you should be able to do, you can. Mixed: 1 Mark and execute at times makes me feel like I'm cheating, but you do have to "earn" it with a hand-to-hand kill and it is fun.
The great thing is that I have a laptop, a desktop and a server all capable of playing this game and don't have to jump through any hoops to install and run it on all three WITH save game synchronization. The downside is one time I tried to play it during a commute on my laptop and since I had no internet, it wouldn't even run the single player. Complaints: 1 I wish there were more levels.
Despite this though, after owning this game for over one full year I STILL play it more than any other game so the replayability is not really an issue. In this game, while it certainly does pay to move through stealthily, you are still expected to kill everybody. I suppose in part this plays into the storyline sam no longer has a boss and was betrayed; sam has never been a particularly gentle guy.

While I think the previous balance was skewed, now it seems skewed in the opposite direction. The levels are structured with a focus towards killing and fighting enemies rather than sneaking around.
